"Like" is the wrong word to use for my experience of this book. It was heartbreaking, uncomfortable, frustrating and ultimately rewarding to read, but I don't know if I would have finished if it hadn't been for the discipline of the book club. I thought about the fact that this isn't a story just for the three main characters. We all have such a short time in which we are alive. And bargaining for more is part of the human condition. I started listening to this on audiobook on a Thursday, just during my commute. By Saturday, I'd gone to the library to get a book version, so I wouldn't have to burn gas just to know what happened next. I devoured the book that weekend.

The author is a master if flashbacks and jump-forwards - so much so that I kind of want to sit down with the events of the story and put them on a timeline to make everything clear. Despite all the jumping around in time, his transitions are excellent point of re

The main idea explored in this book--which I will not describe, to avoid spoiling it for you-- is utterly fascinating. The writing wasn't quite as strong as I wish it had been-- thus the low number of stars for this fascinating story. ...more

Part of me wonders why Kathy, Tommy, and Ruth are so resigned to their fates. But in real life, there are many terrible things that societies have become resigned to over time I suppose. Which may be the point of the novel.
