Whew.
I listened to this on audio, and it took me about 6 weeks to get through (I think at least a few of those weeks were waiting for the book to be available again from the library!) But still, this was not a "I can't wait to get back to this story!" kind of listen. I almost always chose podcasts until I ran out (3 per week). And yet - I'm still giving it 5 stars. Because not all great reads are urgent reads.

Very similar to the movie, but the overall mood was very different in the book. Weird how that can happen. I can't wait to discuss the book at book club!

Not only does the stray neighborhood CAT love him, but I loved Ove from the second chapter. LOVE HIM! He had me as soon as he started calling his neighbors The Poser, The Blond Weed, The Lanky One. And I love (most of) the characters/neighbors around him (can't say I like the one throwing rocks at the cat, after all). One of the reviews (which I rarely, if ever read) on the front cover calls this book "Charming"......I absolutely agree. Goes to show, too, that it doesn't take blood to make you f

This was a lovely story. It starts out simply amusing and engaging, and then gets ya right in the feels later on, but with enough bristly, rough-edged Ove to balance it out and prevent it from going maudlin.
I guess the basic plot is pretty familiar and tropy (crusty, rigid person reluctantly opens their heart due to wacky acquaintances), but it's executed so beautifully, and has a substantial (even dark) emotional core that keeps it from being merely silly or saccharine.

Despite being bothered by the somewhat casual way the author handled the idea of suicide, I was enamored with this book. I fell in love with each of the characters, especially of course Ove, with Parvaneh right there by his side. I felt like Ove's inner dialogue was extremely real, quirks and all. The humor infused throughout the book kept it from being as heavy as it could have been, and allowed it to have a touching ending rather than a depressing one. Absolutely recommend (with the disclaimer

I loved this book! You can't help but love Ove, a grumpy old man. I like the way you get to learn about who he is and why he is the way he is.
