What Members Thought

I'm splitting the difference on ratings between what my 18-year-old self thought (4 stars) and what my almost-30 self thinks (2 stars). I originally gave this book 4 stars, I think because at 18 you're still really searching for yourself and your place in the universe. I identified with the boy's quest to find his "personal legend."

Meh. He lost me at "Personal Legend."
I tried to read this for my library's book discussion podcast, but couldn't get through it. From what I read, I'd say it's a self-help book written as a fable. But the fable was too transparent, the story didn't engage me and I didn't find the self-help aspect to be enlightening. In the end I just couldn't motivate myself to keep reading. ...more

A "The Secret"-esque self-help book in the form of a novel. Even the appearance, from the jacket down to the inside font, is that of a self-help book.

I thought this was a sweet fable, but not exactly life-changing, as so many other reviews would have you believe. Maybe it’s because the lesson you’re supposed to take from it, essentially “Pay attention and follow your heart”, is nothing new. It really isn’t any more complicated than that.
I did think it was well-written, if repetitive at times, and I was interested in Santiago’s journey. But all-in-all, nothing about it surprised me. I’m glad I finally read it.

This book was amazing. It's a quiet, lazy kind of pace, but the story has impact. I really did love the content of this book. Because, fictionally it deals with Personal Journeys, the path of the hero that I love, but it also connects to the real world. And that's the other thing that I love, it has all of the real life Spiritual stuff that I enjoy learning about. It's worth a read.

Not so much. This book was way to hokey for me. The main character has conversations with his heart and with the desert? I'm hoping it just lost a lot in the translation, but even so it felt to me like it was trying too hard to be profound.
