This is the story of Junior (or Arnold, depending on who's talking to him), a budding cartoonist growing up on the Spokane Indian Reservation. He decides to leave his struggling school and attend the all-white farm town high school on the outskirts of the reservation. The decision is not well-received by his best friend, who sees this as a betrayal. The diary chronicles Junior's life on and off of the reservation, and the trials and tribulations o ...more

Everyone but me seems to love Sherman Alexie and to love this book. I enjoyed hearing the author read his own book. He has a nice voice and gives a good cadence to the text.
This is my second try with this author. At the recommendation of a classmate many years ago, I read Indian Killer, which is about as different from The Absolutely True Diary, but, while I can see the underlying strength of the author, the book didn't really move me.

I recently saw Sherman Alexie at a reading in SLC. He was so funny, silly even, and entertaining. This book did not disappoint. The story of Junior who maintains a sense of humor when his world is falling apart on the reservation. He decides to walk over 20 miles a day to go to the white high school. He loses his best friend and his identity while trying to fit in with white kids. The book is funny and sad, and such a great book for teenage boys; it seems the YA books for boys are always fantasy

Pete love, loved this book-probably because of the time he served his mission on the reservation-I thought it was fun and interesting to read. I didn't like all the sexual connotations-for a young adult book I found it inappropriate and it makes the book impossible to recommend as a teacher. I do like Sherman Alexie's writing style and voice, so personally I enjoyed it.

I read this in about two hours while sitting in a campground in Lake Tahoe - it was supposed to be my beach read the next day. Don't expect this one to last you through a vacation, but it is a very engaging read. I laughed, I cried, all that cliche stuff.
