Shelves: ya-fiction, coming-of-age

This YA book has made all the best of lists, and was very well reviewed. I wanted to love it, but didn’t. Don’t get me wrong, I liked it, but didn’t love it. The story is about a Spokane Indian who leaves the reservation school to go to the white school. There are deaths, big games, drinking, and some really cute cartoons, but it just didn’t all add up for me in the end.

I recently saw Sherman Alexie at a reading in SLC. He was so funny, silly even, and entertaining. This book did not disappoint. The story of Junior who maintains a sense of humor when his world is falling apart on the reservation. He decides to walk over 20 miles a day to go to the white high school. He loses his best friend and his identity while trying to fit in with white kids. The book is funny and sad, and such a great book for teenage boys; it seems the YA books for boys are always fantasy ...more

This book and the author have gotten a lot of press in the Book Riot podcast so it has been on my radar. The book gets a lot of press as many school districts want to ban it and the author supports others in his field.

I enjoyed this story and particularly Junior's spirit. I think my son will really enjoy this book and the relationship among the adolescent
boys within. Because of the themes, I'll wait a few years to introduce it. It's a good read though. ...more
