This exposé, featuring the stories of 8 defectors from North Korea, completely blew my mind. Their stories of living through famine, loss, Communism, and escape are heartbreaking. I kept thinking that this must have all happened in the 60s, but this is mid-90s through today. I love that South Korea is so helpful to defectors and that more people escape each year. It is just crazy to me that dictatorships still exist.

Really good. Descriptions of life in North Korea, told from interviews with 6 defectors. I liked that the book kept its focus small and tight and didn't try to do more than it could. The writing and the people are engaging.

So I was supposed to read this book in the spring, but didn't give myself enough time before my class started and only got 50 pages in. I started over last week and I couldn't put it down. Although this is nonfiction, it read like a novel. Demick is an amazing writer and the glimpse into life in North Korea was fascinating. This is worth reading.
