I expected to like this book -- it has a lot of elements that bode well: An interesting setting, a Booker Prize, a female protagonist expected to grow as a person. But the book just didn't work for me. It was slow reading, the setting never really came alive, and I found myself hardly caring about the characters or their problems. About 3/4 of the way through this very vividly-written novel, I just wanted her to get on with it, but then she did, and I'm not sure that I wanted it to end. I think I know these people...or at least people like them!

I am halfway therough this and considering stopping, which I almost never do. The story is bleak, and the writing leaves me cold.
