so after owning this book not reading it for more than two and a half years, i finally read it.

and thank heaven.

it isn't perfect. it isn't balanced all the way. but it is really good at conveying a sense of how one person can dedicate their lives to something, and how cultural and political consequences can show up anywhere, anytime. that humanitarian missions need to be more than dropping food.

also, it doesn't really preach at you, which i appreciated.

This book was the June 2007 selection for my book club. It is a touching and inspiring story about one man who made a difference for the underpriviliged and opressed rural people in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

I love that he's so willing to make mistakes and that he's accepting of Pakistani/Muslim culture the

Good idea and important story, but I found it rather slow through many parts.

This is a truly amazing story. Every American - every human being! - should be required to read this book.

The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is that it is a bit slow at times. And a story this remarkable and inspiring should be impossible to make slow.
