Paris Letters popped up on my radar recently and being a lover of all things Francophile, I was excited to check it out. The book, a true story, by Canadian/Californian/Parisian, Janice MacLeod opens with her on the verge of a burnout. As a means of coping, she vows to write daily in a journal, a practice which offers her many insights and answers, namely the idea to save as much as possible, quit her job and be free to travel. 3.5. A fun read about a woman who makes her dream of quitting her mundane job and moving to Paris happen. A memoir that I really enjoyed reading.
This book is a true 3.5 in my mind. I found it personally inspiring and it has already influenced me to attempt to make some changes in my life. In that regard it merits a 5. The narrator gets annoying -- she manages to be simultaneously smug and lacking in confidence - which brings it down to a 3. The writing is adequate, for the most part transparent but nothing special. So for writing I'd say it's a 3, which is to say better than most of the stuff out there but nothing you'd read for the writ

Hemingway wrote "there are only two places in the world where we can live happy: at home and in Paris." I've always wanted to visit Paris but, until I can, I'll read about others who have visited Paris. In Janice MacLeod's case, she visited Paris, fell in love with a local, and made Paris her home.
