3 or 4 stars, I couldn't decide. Fast read, I read it in 3 days. Easy to follow and it flowed pretty well. It did seem to drag in the middle some. My next step is to research this guy, find out where he is TODAY, and how much of this story was actually true and what parts were 'fictionalized' for effect.

(I read about half of this in January 2007 but stopped.
I am read it again, as it is Lori's selection for our Book Club, to meet in early Sept 2010.)

Despite the drama that has surrounded the fictionalized nature of this "memoir" I actually found it to be quite a compelling read. While many may find a distaste for his overly self-indulgent "stream-of-consciousness" style, I found what felt like the _truth_ in it and that, to me, is the most important characteristic of any book I put in my "didn't hate it" list. Really great book - I like the way he writes.

BUT I am glad I didn't go into the book thinking the events really happened to him. I was very angry when I finished that addicts would read this as a guide or self help book and think his way is the key. Just make up your mind and don't drink or do drugs again, simple. Right.

I wonder if he was even an addict. It is hard to believe after everything else he made up. I picture him with a bottle of champagne on a yacht laughing all the way to the bank.

There's alot of controversy surrounding this book, but whether it's fiction or non-fiction, the book is a powerful look at what we as humans are capable of enduring. I enjoyed the narrative, stream-of-consciousness style; it kept me engaged and curious. The story is simple in it's message and a fairly quick read. Don't look for the religious aspect in trying to overcome addiction. That's one thing I liked -- it wasn't about finding God; it's about mind over matter and the ability to DO SOMETHING ...more
