I am ignoring the whole fiction/non-fiction debate surrounding this book and using it for entertainment only. I listened to it as an audiobook (which, I imagine, is easier than reading it--I believe there is something odd about its actual text, though I've never looked) and found it riveting.

Despite the drama that has surrounded the fictionalized nature of this "memoir" I actually found it to be quite a compelling read. While many may find a distaste for his overly self-indulgent "stream-of-consciousness" style, I found what felt like the _truth_ in it and that, to me, is the most important characteristic of any book I put in my "didn't hate it" list. I was disappointed to see that this was a ripoff story. It had a great number of good lessons in it about addiction....too bad it wasn't true. It would have been a great fiction book!!

There's alot of controversy surrounding this book, but whether it's fiction or non-fiction, the book is a powerful look at what we as humans are capable of enduring. I enjoyed the narrative, stream-of-consciousness style; it kept me engaged and curious. The story is simple in it's message and a fairly quick read. Don't look for the religious aspect in trying to overcome addiction. That's one thing I liked -- it wasn't about finding God; it's about mind over matter and the ability to DO SOMETHING
