This books primary strength is in the creativity of its author. Fairy tales and dystopian fantasy are currently all the rage, but not too many authors marry them successfully because you have to be fairly skilled at world creation in order to do so. Marissa Meyer's New Beijing is grungy and beautiful and over crowded and empty. Cinder is a wonderful creation -- part cyborg and part girl. I've been meaning to read this for ages, due to the eye-catching cover art and my weakness for fairytale retellings.

I really enjoyed listening to this steampunk retelling of Cinderella. I was super disappointed in the cliffhanger ending, but can't wait to get my hands on the next book. The audiobook reader is great. ...more

Sci-fi retelling of classic fairy tales? Count me in and I'm in love with it already.

I'd forgotten how gut-wrenchingly heartbreaking the classic fairy tales could be - seeing as how modern day animations tend to sugar-coat things. This retelling of Cinderella reminded me of how gruesome the classic fairy tales were while also shining the finer points of it with a ski-fi highlight.
