This would have been so much better if it was about 200 pages shorter

This book that has been on my shelf for a few years but I always felt I needed to read it in December. Really, it can be read anytime. It is always Christmas in Christmasland, a place where Charlie Manx takes children to live forever. He took the wrong kid when he took Vic McQueen at age 17. Creepy in all the right ways. The reader for the audiobook did an awesome job with this book--I'm not surprised I liked her here as I've also liked her as Red in Orange is the New Black and as Captain Janeway in Star Trek Voyager. It's been a long time since I read anything in the "horror" genre, and man! this did not disappoint. I'm tempted to go for five stars. What I got was a little bit of magic, some deeply damaged and flawed main characters, a categorically evil antagonist... and a story about love and redemption. Surprising and unputdownable. ...more

It's a lot to digest but the story was so well done. If you are a fan of creepy horror and like those stories that leave you unsettled but not disgusted then this is for you. If I had to narrow the theme down to one simple description - it's about parenting in a world of monsters. ...more
