I can't believe I waited this long to read Kindred, much less Octavia Butler! I stayed up for two nights, reading Kindred, and the first time I did it, I was only about 25% through. Butler has built engaging characters, an immersive narrative, and a fantasy novel that makes it easy to suspend disbelief about the time travel aspects. Dana is an amazing woman with a will of steel, as far as I'm concerned, and I loved so many of the supporting characters: Kevin and Nigel and Sarah and Alice and Car ...more

Wowowowow this book was so amazing. The premise was brilliant and I was hooked from the moment it began, fully tied up in the characters and the storyline. Octavia Butler is a gorgeous writer and I can’t wait to read more of her work.

3.5 stars. I really liked the idea of this book-it was a fascinating way to look at history. The dialogue and writing was mediocure, but the characters were interesting enough that I couldn't put the book down. ...more

I really liked this book, I am a sucker for time travel, but I really liked the message of this book and the open endedness and the many unanswered questions.
That the main character did not find it easy to assimilate to the past good, that she learned so much about herself was interesting.
I wonder why I haven't read everything this author has ever written.

A grabbing premise with a conflicted character- not entirely thought out or written but engaging and ridiculously quick to read
