I really loved this book. I loved the narrating character. His voice was so authentic. I laughed throughout the book - so much humor infused into many serious situations, but not in a way that took away from the emotion of the stories. The book almost broke my heart at one point, and then rebounded, then broke it a little again, but ended hopefully. (How's that for vague? No spoilers in my reviews!) Overall a really touching and emotional story with lots of character and humor woven throughout.

I assume that this book probably wraps up with a happy ending, but I read about half of it prior to leaving on a vacation and after coming home I'm just not terribly interested in picking it up again. The book is a bit of a painful exploration of a couple's courtship and marriage in which the husband loves his wife but has trouble expressing it. Possibly because of this, he always seems to be chasing her, while she tolerates his presence.

Goal accomplished. I decided to read this before the BBC adaptation airs on Masterpiece Theater tonight here in the states. I think this story will be very relatable to a lot of folks. I am looking forward to seeing the film adaptation as it may more clearly express some of the dry humor. Parts of this book were a bit of a slog. The premise feels a little shaky and some of the plot points are a bit contrived. Nonetheless I think it does portray a marriage relationship with real honesty.
