I may be the last person in America to have read this book, which fit the category "A bestseller from a genre you don't normally read" in the Ultimate Popsugar Challenge. I'm calling the genre "Non-fiction about sports" and as best I can recall, the only other book I've read in this genre was Friday Night Lights, which was also excellent. What an incredible story! As a friend put in her review, if it were fiction I wouldn't have believed that the Americans pulled it off. The story of the nine Americans, and in particular Joe Rantz, along with their coaches has something for everyone--there's sports, history, science, love, and personal stories of perseverance. There were parts that were slow and left me thinking that I wanted Laura Hillenbrand to be writing it, but overall it was a great read. The author manages to make the story

I had no interest in reading this book but did like it a lot. The stories from the great depression were reminders of how easy we have it. I love an underdog story and this one is a great one. A good non fiction read. I am not sure the author did the best job of intertwining the story of Hilter coming to power along with this story but he had to try to explain that side in order to capture the olympics of that year.
