Loved reading more about rowing and feeling more of a connection to a family member who coaches rowing at Stanford. Now I get what it is all about (well without the blood sweat and tears of it!) . The story of the University of Washington's men's rowing team and their struggle to represent the United States in the 1936 Olympics. What I didn't realize, when I started this book, is that it's much more about rowing and the team than it is about the 1936 Olympics. The team doesn't arrive in Germany until page 305 of a book that's about 400 pages. What an incredible story! As a friend put in her review, if it were fiction I wouldn't have believed that the Americans pulled it off. The story of the nine Americans, and in particular Joe Rantz, along with their coaches has something for everyone--there's sports, history, science, love, and personal stories of perseverance. There were parts that were slow and left me thinking that I wanted Laura Hillenbrand to be writing it, but overall it was a great read. The author manages to make the story
