It was a true 3.5. It's kind of a shame, really, I felt the story deserved more but the characters (with the exception of Lyra) were too shallow. Lyra Belacqua is a young orphan being raised by the scholars at Oxford University in England. Lyra's world is similar to our own in many ways, but it is also different in many ways. The most obvious difference is the personal dæmon, a representation of a person's soul, that is visible to others. Children's dæmons constantly change with their moods, but one mark of adulthood is that a person's dæmon takes on a fixed form--an animal that shows its person's true nature.

It was far more complex than I expected a children's book to be, which could be a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it. Pullman isn't particularly funny, his characters are somewhat peculiar at times, and his little girl doesn't always seem to act like a little girl. It's imaginative, but I'm not a big fantasy reader. When I went in search of an online "guide to The Golden Compass", I found articles on the author and some controversy regarding the novel's message.

The best audiobook series I've listened to so far. Listening to these made me love the series soo much more! Better than the movie even!

Very inventive juvenile fantasy book. I'll have to think a bit to see if I can figure out where the title comes from, though.
