This was a reread - I think I read this for the first time in 2000, and I loved it just as much as I remembered. It is such an amazing story with such real, vivid characters and heroes. The good are very very good, and the bad are very very bad. It takes place in a wonderful parallel universe that is just different enough from ours to keep you slightly confused and yet desperately interested to figure it all out. I can't WAIT to see the movie!

It was a true 3.5. It's kind of a shame, really, I felt the story deserved more but the characters (with the exception of Lyra) were too shallow. The production I listened to was excellent, several voices with clear distinctions between roles. The premise was a bit confusing, dust (not our dust) that is possibly original sin (something I don't believe in, so my confusion may be my own lack of knowledge); and rich megalomaniacs and adorable urchins and daemons - not demons, mind, but daemons... H

Lyra Belacqua is a young orphan being raised by the scholars at Oxford University in England. Lyra's world is similar to our own in many ways, but it is also different in many ways. The most obvious difference is the personal dæmon, a representation of a person's soul, that is visible to others. Children's dæmons constantly change with their moods, but one mark of adulthood is that a person's dæmon takes on a fixed form--an animal that shows its person's true nature.

This is the second time I've read this book and the second time I inhaled it so quickly. The series is one of my favorites - right up there with the Lord of the Rings.
