This was another part of history - the real orphan train - that I did not know anything about and it was heartbreaking to read about. I would have liked to have had the author delve into the train experience a bit more and where it started and the impact it had on others. I really enjoyed the part with the main character Vivienne and her story and tragedy, but the storyline with the other character Molly was a bit more unbelievable and could have been done so much better to have a stronger impac ...more

I loved this story -- a mix of modern and historical fiction, based on the real orphan trains from the late 20s.

After her parents die in a tragic fire, Niamh find herself a reluctant passenger on the Orphan Train bound for the countryside in a movement to 'help' foster kids find a family. Although well-meaning, the children are carted aboard and exhibited like possessions chosen for their age, ability to work or money that the families would receive for housing the children.

I think I would have liked this book a little more had I not just finished another book that discusses the orphan train (and which also had some similarities such as characters named Dutchy and an unlikely yet touching reunion of orphans later in their lives). This book was also a little contrived at times - present day foster child who has been bounced between many bad homes meets up with elderly woman who had been on the orphan train in her youth and had also been in many bad homes and both wo ...more

I have to say that I enjoyed the historical stuff more but that is because I am very interested in orphan trains. The book was excellent though.
