As much as I know in my heart this is a true story, what happened to David at the hands of his mother seems too horrible to be real. My own mother, who was nothing like David's, gave this book to me years ago, and I tried reading it back then, but for whatever reason couldn't get into it. This time, I devoured it in one night, right before bed, and I'm surprised it didn't give me nightmares.

I understand now why so many of my high school students read this book. Honestly, it is horrifying if even a fraction of this story is true. What the author lives through is riveting and almost fantastical, but told in a straight-forward, low-level way: pretty much the perfect formula for a gripping read.

My biggest complaint: although the book opens with Dave's escape from his mother's abuse in the presence of law enforcement, I feel like I still didn't get closure. I want to know more about hi ...more
