This book had a few features I generally enjoy. Much of it takes place in a bookstore. The chapters start with short story descriptions. But that was the end of the pros. The story was okay--there were some twists but much of it was predictable. The writing was pretty awful. One line saying that the gym smelled like "both kinds of balls" about summed up my feelings on the prose. Not that I wanted more to read, but the book makes some jumps in time as if the author just didn't want to deal with t

I adored this book. Hands down one of my favorite reads. Everything needed to tell the story was perfectly built into the narrative. This is what I long for in literary fiction - beautiful character development, pacing perfection, no extra fluff that just adds to the word count but doesn't enhance the experience, and relatable connections between the reader and the characters. I listened to the absolutely wonderful audio production with my 11-year-old daughter. We both loved this book and were both in tears at the end. Scott Brick is always a favorite narrator, but he really does a fabulous job with this one. Definitely a good one to listen to.

This was a solid, engaging story with a measured, gentle pace. I enjoyed reading it, sometimes despite the quite schmaltzy language, because of the real gems mixed in. I guess I didn’t feel a lot of depth to the narrative, although I think the author was trying to achieve that. All in all - a nice summer read with some heartstring twanging.
