I must be really slow because wtf just happened? I didn't get it. The book was going great. I was enjoying it. Shit was finally starting to happen when suddenly... THE END. WTAF? Was there some secret subliminal message at the end of this story that I'm not privy to? Am I supposed to just make up my own ending? The movie trailer make it look like there was so much more going on than there actually was. Consider my bubble not only popped but completely destroyed. The ending left Krissy completely

I had listened to the audio version of this over the summer. I just read the hard copy and continue to have a lot of doubts about the described society. It seems impossible that the society could have the amount of security necessary to maintain such a monitored environment without a lot more people assigned to security roles. Moreover, the can't-see-colors aspect seemed especially far-fetched and silly to me. I'll probably read the next book in the series though.

This teen fiction book was enjoyable until the end, which I found very unsatisfying. But good creation of an alternative utopian (or distopian, depending on your viewpoint) world where "sameness" and total structure as eliminated both pain of any sort and true emotions, good or bad. Since I'm (embarrassingly) really into YA apocalyptic books, I decided to read this book. It is on many "best book" lists.
The best thing about this book is that the main character's name is Jonas. His best friend is Asher. What are the chances?! And I didn't know that before I purchased the book.
The book's storyline is simple, not gory, and tame for what usually are apocalyptic books. I liked it enough (thank goodness because I liked it for the names alone!), though its not one of my favorites ...more

Even though I liked it, it was too YA for me to give it a higher rating. I like dystopian literature and this wasn't bad either but when finished, it felt like I'd only skimmed through a book. It was slightly eerie reading about people living without colors and taking pills to suppress their emotions. But after the dystopian worlds of Orwell and Bradbury, this just seems too meager a read.

A good reader for the audiobook made this an enjoyable listen for both me and my husband during a long drive. The book falls a little short on explaining the underlying society and structure that would be necessary to put into place all the "Big Brother" security that's apparently happening in the town, but I still enjoyed it.
