2013: I actually read an entire book in one day! I cannot remember the last time I made such an accomplishment. This was a great story, riveting and well-deserving of the numerous awards it has garnered.

This was one of those books that was assigned for school to many of my peers through middle school, but our class didn't get it until 10th grade, and like most teens I dreaded the 'mandatory reading list' prospect, but was willing to give it a chance. It was probably one of the best books I read in high school, optional or mandatory, and I was actually disappointed I hadn't read it sooner. Read this book for a second time with my students. It's such a compelling book; they responded so deeply to it...they were outraged and disturbed and grew to care about the main character, Jonas. The ending was confusing for them. I agree with them that there are several ways to read the ending. We had great discussions.

What a wonderful book. My son is reading it for his 6th grade English class so I thought I'd read it too. A fantastic look at the problems that arise when you create a society of "sameness."
