Members of a Facebook reading club I belong to always rave about Colleen Hoover's books, so when I found this one in a Little Free Library, I figured it was worth a try. 'Ugly Love' was OK, but I'll admit to expecting more given the hype. Although the club members more often were posting about her newer works than this one, so many say she is their favorite author and they love all of her books. I think it might be a difference in genre preferences, I like mysteries and thrillers, and 'Ugly Love Members of a Facebook reading club I belong to always rave about Colleen Hoover's books, so when I found this one in a Little Free Library, I figured it was worth a try. 'Ugly Love' was OK, but I'll admit to expecting more given the hype. Although the club members more often were posting about her newer works than this one, so many say she is their favorite author and they love all of her books. I think it might be a difference in genre preferences, I like mysteries and thrillers, and 'Ugly Love' was absolutely a romance. While I don't mind all the gory details of a murder or medical incident, I found the frequent sex scenes in this book to be a bit much.
The book started off well, with nurse Tate moving in with her brother in San Francisco in order to take a job and continue her education. I had high hopes, again because I enjoy medical themed books, but honestly, she could have been a grad student working at Target or Starbucks, and it wouldn't have changed anything else about the plot. Tate's pilot brother is out of town, but she soon meets his neighbor and fellow pilot Miles, though it is a rather unkind introduction, as he is drunk and passed out in front of Tate's apartment door. Once he sleeps off his buzz, Tate realizes that Miles might just be the sexiest man she's seen, although Miles is also mysteriously reserved, refusing to allow their relationship to be anything more than 2 people having sex, no love, not even a friendship.
The flashback scenes that explain Miles' history were better than the main plot. Miles mentions the name 'Rachel' to Tate on that very first night, but one of the rules he sets in place is to never ask about his past. Readers learn that Rachel is a girl from high school who Miles immediately falls in love with, much like Tate does for him, and throughout the book more of their history is revealed. As I expected, sex comes into play here too, but it's not quite as over the top as when Miles is with Tate.
Before I'd read another of Hoover's books, I'd pay more attention to the plot and see if it sounded interesting. I chose 'Ugly Love' based on author reputation alone, and while I understand why others may have loved it, it wasn't my kind of book. I didn't hate it, just had a 'meh' feeling afterwards. ...more

For pure readability, I would give this 4 stars. Hoover certainly writes well! Her characters are captivating and we are sucked right into the story. However, it was just a romance, and with some pretty cheesy girl-sacrifices-herself-for-love tropes built in, thus the 3 stars. Still, I'll read anything Hoover writes and enjoy every word. ...more

I like CoHo’s brand of trauma laced with love. It makes her stories pack a more powerful punch than I typically get from the romance genre. Ugly Love is no exception.
