I liked this better than Gone Girl, which I think puts me in the minority. But I tend to be someone who loves the rawness of the first book, or the first album. They tend to have this unfinished, searching quality as the author/artist/whatever tries to find what they want to say and how they want to say it, a grittiness almost. Like many people that flew threw Gone Girl, I picked up some of Flynn's earlier work expecting another fast-paced thrill ride. While Gone Girl was certainly dark, it had so many twists and turns that I was swept along saying, "that was nuts," but already on to the next chapter.
Unfortunately Sharp Objects, doesn't have the same pace. It bumps along slowly so you focus on the darkness, and there's a lot of twisted ugliness in this book. While I had planned to read both this book and Dark Places, I ...more

hooooooooooooooly shit this book was B A N A N A S. whilst I wasn't supersurprised at the ultimate outcome of all things, the route taken was intense and really quite amazing. I can't say this was an enjoyable read, but it was very, very compelling, and I will probably read more Gillian Flynn in the future, after maybe drinking a lot.

I read about half and decided I'd had enough. Then I read a synopsis and was glad that I'd put it down. It was just a bit too dark and twisted for me.
