This is a hella crazy read. I laughed, cried, cursed, and even threw my book once because of all the turbulence inside. The true story of The Walls' lives opened my eyes that poverty is real, irresponsible parenting happened, and kids are valuable! I think the Walls' parents did not deserve their lovely, bright, unbelievably brilliant children! I especially love the relationship between Jeannette and her brother Brian. I had been avoiding this book for a while, both because it sounded fairly depressing and because memoirs aren't my favorite thing. I finally read it for a book club and am glad I did. While it's not a book you necessarily enjoy reading as your mouth will drop open at the "parenting" that Jeannette Walls suffered through. However, she is remarkably upbeat and resilient for such a tough childhood and her writing style allows you to become involved in the family.

A heartbreaking, at times almost unbelievable story of family and hardship that made me grateful for my parents and my childhood in a way that few things ever have. Also a miraculous and humbling story of the resiliency of the human spirit, and of the things we can achieve or force ourselves to confront in the face of adversity. Brilliant.
