Like many people, I first read The Great Gatsby in high school and I don't think I really got it at the time. I vaguely remembered wild parties and a car crash, but this was all I took away from the novel. Reading it again as an adult, I can't believe how little I retained. I had the perception that Gatsby was mostly about rich people throwing lavish parties until tragedy strikes at the end. Upon re-reading I was surprised by just how quickly things turn sour. I thought this book was really good, but it isn't one of my favorites. Maybe I am past the place in my life that the messages of the book are really impactful, or maybe it was something I already have learned from life, but I didn't feel like it was "life changing." The story was excellent, as was the writing.
