Yawn. A friend made this quote about this book: "Just goes to show what happens when you write fanfiction and your parents are publishers." Amen, my friend. This book was boring as all get out and managed to be cliche to the extreme while also completely ripping off Pern and MiddleEarth in an insulting way. ...more

I'm really impressed that Christopher Paolini bega nwriting this book at age 15. It's a very, very good effort. I found the book to be very engaging and kind of addictive, but I also felt there were a lot of weak plot points, where perhaps the author didn't really have strong ideas about how to move the story forward and therefore certain things/characters jumped in at the last moment to solve the problem. I never would have had the patience to read this book, but enjoyed listening to it while commuting. The book adds little to the fantasy genre, sticking pretty close to the tried-and-true humans, elves, and dwarves in an uneasy alliance to ward off more evil types (e.g., The Empire). The writing is somewhat stilted as well, but the ...more

A fun, entertaining book. Fantasy Fun. It is geared towards young adults I think but if you enjoyed reading Harry Potter, you will really enjoy this book as well. The first of four in a series with the 4th and last book coming out in November 2011.

So I had to read this book before I watched the movie. I had high hopes that it would keep my attention like a few other fantasy novels I have read, which I still need to add to my list. I kept getting bored with it and thinking that this might be why some people don't like it. For a kid who hasn't read some of the fantasy greats this may be a great place to start. ...more
