The original title of the book in Swedish was "Men who hate women", not sure if that would have flown off the bookshelves as a detective novel. The title makes more sense after reading the book. There are many surprises that are quite horrible and gruesome. The book has many twists and turns and solving the "murder" isn't most interesting part of it.

I could tell that the real star of the story is Lisbeth Salander. You don't meet her until a little later in the book and her story is told separat

A thrilling and dark mystery set in modern-day Sweden, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, is the first in a series of three from Stieg Larsson. This book starts a little slow, introducing journalist Mikael Blomqvist who has been found guilty of libel against uber-capitalist Hans Wennerstrom. Not generally a fan of the mystery/detective genre but this is an exception. Larsson takes that paradigm and infuses it with new life. Certainly, a modern Swedish backdrop, a alt/punk computer hacker with the code name Wasp who has some striking parallels to Pippi Longstocking all grown up, and a suave, ladies' man reporter to drive the narrative does inject vitality. In the beginning, I had a hard time getting into the book. I was fearful it was a financial thriller, which is not my type of book. I persevered and was happy to realize the true story was much more titillating.

It took me about 250 pages to finally get to a point where I WANTED to read this book. At that point it was pretty quick to read. Not sure if I'll read the next one (which I have).

It was okay...I think it just got too hyped for me. I tried reading it last year and couldn't get into it. Better this time around. Still intrigued by the sequels. ...more

A good thriller, solidly written. I found Blomkvist annoying but will read the follow up for more Salander.
