I've had this on my "must read next" list for several years now, and I'm really glad I finally read it (and I don't understand why I kept putting it off, the whole book took only a few hours, and it was fantastic). Marjane Satrapi is appealingly (sometimes brutally!) honest. This was a brilliant book, and I hope it is on college syllabuses (syllabi?) across the world. This was an amazing read. I could not put it down. I think it also made a whole world of difference that it was written by a woman. Loved this book! Marjane Satrapi was a little girl in the 1980s during Iranian cultural revolution. It's such a complicated culture, so learning about it through the lens of a little girl was perfect for someone like me who knows so little about it. Her parents eventually send her to school in Austria to escape the violence and repression in her own country, and she deals with coming-of-age issues and cultural identity there. I learned so much! The illustrations (is that what you call them in a ...more
