Al principio pensé que Newland de verdad lograría crear una vida diferente con May pero cuando sus planes se empiezan a fallar y aparece Ellen, toda su lógica desaparece. Creo que su desenlace es el más triste pues dedica su vida a cumplir con los dictados de la sociedad. Hubo varias frases que hicieron del joven Newland un personaje esperanzador para luego solamente verlo desaparecer en la monotonía: "Las mujeres deberían ser libres... tan libres como nosotros."

3.5 rating. I'm always here for a critique on the ridiculousness of society and what is "proper". The only let down for me was that I was really irritated by Newland Archer for 99% of the novel.

I read this for a book club pick and probably would not have chose for myself...
With that being said I enjoyed this way more than I ever expected. It feels so contemporary. I love when the men think about the gender roles that are put upon the women. I also love that the women end up being smarter than any of the men expect. May and Ellen both end up happy in their own way.

It's been some time since I read this, I'm just updating with books I've read in the past. I usually enjoy reading Victorian/Edwardian literature with its somewhat complicated prose and view of lives very different from my own, and this was no exception.
