Readers who are familiar with Dante's Inferno, will appreciate the rich symbolism and allegory here, but that background knowledge is not necessary to enjoy the story.

I'd say this has been my least favorite of Jodi Picoult's book. The storyline seemed intriguing, a father with a hidden past, a mother as the chief breadwinner in the household, and their teenage daughter whose relationship with her boyfriend goes farther than she would like. When the father finds out his daughter was raped, his dark side emerges, with furious anger directed towards her boyfriend. Jodi Picoult truly knows how to delve into emotional issues in all her books, and she definitely does it again in The Tenth Circle. Some parts took me by surprise and left me speechless, and others were a bit...out there. Bottom line though, Picoult just gave voice to all parties involved in such a severe action as rape.
