I love the magic and whimsy that Ms. Allen puts in each one of here stories. They make all of her books a delight to read in one way or another. In Lost Lake, it all surrounds a small cabin resort on a lake that has fallen on hard times. The owner, Eby, is ready to make a change. She doesn't want to let go of the place, but she doesn't want to stay and keep it up either. There's also the matter of her best friend, who is so attached to the place, she panics at the thought of leaving it. Enter, K

Some of my favorite books are those I start out thinking “this isn’t for me” but by the end I love it. This is one of those.
The story is meant to be this magical, haunting story about lost love, the fleeting essence of childhood, moving on from the bad parts of life among other things. From the beginning the story takes on a magical realism spin which was my main problem with the book. I don’t like magical realism....BUT this one is done so well! This book was not as good as some of this author's other books. I liked the characters and the setting well enough, but it never had the charm that made her other books such nice feel-good reads. There is magic in this book, but it didn't have the cleverness that made the magic cool in the other novels. I never quite believed the Alligator Man theme here and so found it distracting from getting to know the other characters instead of helping the book feel haunting or magic.

Lost Lake by Sarah Addison Allen. The story begins with happiness that unravels into chaos. Eby, Kate, Lisette and Selma are struggling to come to terms with their past. Although the women's stories differ, they uncover unexpected answers at the Lake. Learning to embrace the future, they finally are ready to be found.

A fav Sarah Addison Allen book. I really loved the characters in this one. There were quite a few stories being juggled and at the conclusion I felt like there were maybe a few too many stories being tied up with pretty bows but it was definitely a feel-good, charming novel with great characters. Always a touch of whimsy and magic which I really enjoy.
Side note: author may want to find a new editor :P I was yanked right out of the story a handful of times due to dumb editing/typo type errors.

When you read Sarah Addison Allen's books there's a suspension of belief that you have to just go with to feel the magic. It usually subtle, though this book asks you to take a big leap. With some authors, I might roll my eyes and say "whatever," but she weaves a tale filled will characters that are just so darn likable, you want to wrap yourself up in that magic and see where the ride takes you.

There is a lot that people criticize about her writing and plotting, but I've never read one of her novels that I didn't finish in one day. With my busy schedule and short attention span, that'll get an author at least 4 stars, guaranteed.
