I am really, really glad this was not my first Gaiman novel. If it had been, I would have never read and enjoyed Anansi Boys and Neverwhere.
I felt preached at, confused, twirled in circles.. you name it by this book. So much was happening packed in such short bursts of story that it was difficult to keep up and grasp everything. Even so, it was very difficult to connect to Shadow and i couldn't help but feel grossed out at many of the scenes that were detailed.
Very, very disappointed. ...more

[Review from 2004.] I liked this more than Stardust, less than Neverwhere (which is definitely his best novel, imho). It was fun trying to pick out the allusions to gods and legends, especially if, like me, you were the kid who devoured the mythology section of the library. (Mr. Nancy, I had you at hello.) If I have a complaint it's that it dragged a bit in places, the length didn't seem entirely justified.
