I found it difficult to follow Brown Girl Dreaming's narrative structure, though knowing it is a memoir and not an autobiography helped ease my frustration. I feel a more linear approach would have worked with the verse structure. There was a point when Woodson mentioned her grandfather Hope dying and immediately after we hear how her baby brother contracted lead poisoning and eventually left the hospital in his stroller.
