I don't usually enjoy books written in prose - I have previously found it kind of hard to feel like I've gotten enough detail and character development with prose to enjoy a story. This book was different. It was beautiful. The characters were so developed, even with such limited words. It was a really well-written memoir just perfect for introducing young people to some hard issues.

This was another book on my 6th grader's Battle of the Books reading list.

What a beautifully written collection of narrative poems. The poems go right to the heart of what growing up and family meant for Jacqueline Woodson. The poems capture the sensory feel of childhood, the difference between her grandparents' home in the south and her moather's home in New York City.
