One of the (many) excellent things that comes through in Mountain Goats lyrics is John Darnielle's tenderness for the outsider, the misunderstood, the outcast. He cares about the high school kids in The Best Ever Death Metal Band out of Denton, the emotional refugees in Color in Your Cheeks. "People who others talk down to," he's called them.

I'm having a hard time rating this because the subject matter just destroyed me a little bit, and because I love John Darnielle's music so much and could hear a little of it here, so I'm coming at it all skewed. Maybe that's review enough - if you love the Mountain Goats, you will probably like the writing, but the story is hard to read. I loved the mail order game, though. I'd give this one 2.5 stars, mainly for such an out of the box concept and making you think twice about you interact with someone that has a disfigurement.
Beyond that, the book wasn't at all what I thought it was going to be. From the description I thought we were going to exploring a game, not exploring the after-effects of a life-changing action of a 17 year-old. I'm also a big fan of why.
