I really enjoyed this book. I got completely caught up in the story and did not predict the ending at all. The tone is breezy and light, but the subject matter here ranges across parenting, bullying, domestic violence, and friendship. The book deftly handles the subject in a way that didn't feel heavy handed but was also not completely flippant. I'm really glad that my book club picked this one because I think it'll make a great discussion point and I probably wouldn't have read it on my own. Th ...more

Pretty dark with a lot of substance to it. I was able to guess a lot of the twists before they happened, but that didn't diminish my enjoyment of the story. Figuring out who died was surprisingly less important to me than the sub-plots and the character developments. I was really impressed with it. ...more

This was good but not as good as What Alice Forgot. The author really knows how to follow multiple characters and finish strong with a surprise ending, which I love. But...a huge part of this book, actually the main part, deals with domestic violence and sexual abuse, which, despite the dramatic storytelling and good ending, is too heartbreaking for me. I get too upset! I did really love the supporting characters, though!

This was definitely a guilty pleasure book--it may not be fine literature, but I did really enjoy it. It does a great job of unfolding the mystery of who is murdered and how very slowly throughout. It's also a good lesson on perspective, something I've been teaching my students. Interviews that we learn are with a reporter writing about the murder show how outsiders view people without actually knowing about that person and his/her life. The satire on the school moms was great and made me less s ...more

I liked this book a lot. Though I don't think its a "THIS IS THE BEST BOOK EVER 5 STAR RATING, I'M GOING TO HAVE MY KIDS READ THIS BOOK SOMEDAY" book, it was an amazingly tight mystery that leaves you guessing and very interested.

I will say the subject matter reminded me a bit too much of my neighborhood, except for the murder. ha ha!

I would definitely recommend this book. And I can't wait to finish watching the HBO Series - which is already different than the book.
