I avoided this book for years because I had heard there was animal abuse and I didn't think I could handle it. It finally came up in one of my book clubs that I couldn't rig the vote on and I'm so happy I was "forced" to read it. I won't deny that I skipped over a few sections when I didn't want to know exactly what was happening to the animals, but it is overall a love story, and a great one.

I don't even know how to explain this book -- everything was wonderful and mesmerizing from the first sentence. The entire story was an adventure you take along with the narrator and I LOVED learning the behind-the-scenes aspects of a circus, especially during the 1920s and 30s. You could tell how much research Gruen went through for this book, describing these scenes, characters and events to the fullest detail that it seems as if you're living in that period. Entertaining but not life-changing. The setting, a traveling circus during the depression, was pretty cool.
