A coming of age story about a boy and his beloved dogs.
What I liked: Billy sets a goal and works toward it. He's tenacious and determined. He also is very connected with the dogs. He takes good care of them and loves them deeply. The descriptions of the Ozarks were beautifully written.
What I didn't like: The hunting scenes that got repetitive after the first few and made this book feel longer than it was. The religious and misogynistic overtones. (To be fair, if I had read this as a child, I w ...more

I read this book because my daughter's third grade teacher read it to the class and I thought my daughter and I could discuss it. I'm sure I read it as a child, but couldn't remember enough details so had to re-read it. I enjoyed this book and discussing it with Elizabeth as I read it. I like this glimpse back into a different time when kids had more freedom, but also worked a lot harder. His childhood was much different than children of today.

LOOOOOOOOOOVED this book. I have read it at least 4 or 5 times. I cry every single time. I plan on reading it to my children as well. This is in my top 10 best books of all time. Great book.
