It’s difficult to write a review of Jane Eyre. It’s a classic that has influenced so many works. I thought I had read it in high school or college, but I think I would have remembered more of the lines. Certainly any movie or re-creation doesn’t do it justice as so much of Jane’s inner thoughts are critical to the character development.

I think I may have liked the story more if it wasn't so hard to read. I just think in general I may not be cut out for the classics. There were so many words I was unfamiliar with that it often made it hard to understand the dialogue

There couldn't possibly be another classic that I would love more. Jane is so compelling, such a beloved character. And oh the romance! From the moment Jane and Mr. Rochester meet, there is chemistry that cannot be denied. They barely touch during their courtship, but the passion they feel for one another practically sizzles on the page. Read it (loved it) in HS, Read again as I approach my 50th year and all I can say is... The writing is gorgeous. But Jane Eyre herself as a charactor was so meek and self-effacing. I keep hearing her calling ROchester "Her Master" and "Sir". It just felt rather mroe 50 shades of Grey than I expected. I'm reading Middlemarch at the same time, and I can see the beginnnings of feminist agitation there clearly, and oerhaps Jane Eyre in her subservience is also an agitator, in terms of "is this what ...more
