Awe, this was so lovely! I took a long long break from reading Jane Austen after I got stuck on Mansfield Park. I'm so glad I chose to pick this one up recently. I really did love it much like I loved Sense & Sensibility. Anne was such a wonderful main character and I loved watching the inner battles of hers and Wentworth's. I thought that everyone got their due in the end. And I really enjoyed every moment of reading it. I was very surprised with just how addicting it was and how quickly it rea ...more

I first read this novel in 1986 when I was on the Carleton London program and I remember finding it both funny and touching. As an older person now (i.e. older single person), I find parts of this novel even more powerful. It's not for everyone. The language is formal (if biting) and the social commentary sly. Thank the gods I finished this perfectly dreadful novel. Drying paint has a higher entertainment value. I am tempted to award a 2nd star if for no other reason than the novel at least accurately portrays this period of history which is filled with the inane concerns of the British class and rank system, along with the bland lives that women were forced to endure.
