This book was fun - very Jane Austen. Her plots of course tend to be very similar; all revolve around romances that seem doomed only to find their way in the end. (At least, all that I've read of hers, anyway - which I believe are most.) It's interesting to read of England in her time from her privileged point of view - the issues that her characters dealt with being somewhat, er, fluffy. I know that I breezed through this book some weekend in high school, but I barely remembered the plot. Persuasion is so tense, so much more fraught than other Austen novels--perhaps in part because the action of the story takes place in a shorter time span than Pride & Prejudice--I don't know. I love Anne Elliot and the way that she triumphs over her nasty father and mean-spirited sisters. Not my favorite Jane Austen. I know its supposed to be deep. I'm thinking maybe if I were a little more invested in the time period I would get why certain things got so much play. I also struggled to keep track of who was who. Oh well, better luck next time. ...more
