American Street is a disarming look at the life of a young Haitian immigrant whose mother is sent to a detention center while she’s sent on to her aunt and cousins in Detroit. Fabiola’s new world is disorienting and confusing and she makes some poor choices in her quest to find her way.

I loved the mix of Haitian magical beliefs and modern day Detroit. I cringed at the realism of one white girl’s death meaning more than those of the (black) drug dealers. I was touched by the insight into this ch

Somewhere between 3.5-4 stars. I loved the Creole and Haitian Vodou spirituality weaved into this story, and I liked the main character quite a bit. The romance was a bit rushed, and there were some pieces I felt were a little stereotypical, but overall it was a good story with some poignant elements. It also touched on some issues with race in America, but I actually thought it could have taken that discussion a little further.
