Here is a contrary story for you. My mom always wanted me to read this book, as it was one of her favorites. We generally struggled with books, I never wanted to read what she suggested. And I resisted being read aloud to once I could read on my own. So despite being a big reader, I never read this. I'm pretty sure a copy of The Secret Garden sat on my bookshelf maybe until I left for college. Maybe it is still there. Sorry mom, I should have read this earlier.

Read for History of Children’s Lit
I adored this book as a kid and it mostly holds up. It does bug me that the focus shifts so heavily from Mary to Colin in the second half, though. But I never realized how many Gothic elements it has...which has me considering changing the focus of my research project for this class. Hm.
