The Shining is one of those books that pretty much everyone else had read but that I had never read. Well, now I have finally read it!
I saw the film version with Jack Nicholson forever ago so I knew the basic story going in but the book was better than the film and kept me captivated throughout.

An excellent horror story and a deep psychological exploration of the damage of alcoholism and dysfunction. After I finished reading it, I did a little research and I wasn't surprised to find an interview where Kind admitted he wrote it as a way to deal with his own struggle against hurting his children when he was drunk (for the record, he never abused his kids.) This books messed up my dreams and I was happy to be done with it, but I am really glad I read it.

I don't know how I had managed not to have read this book long ago. It was really fantastic.

It took some time to erase the image of Jack Nicholson from my mind as I read The Shining...but once I did, I realized how sad the story really is. Jack Torrance was a tortured soul from the get-go and Danny only 5 but shouldering the burden of "the shine". Once again, I heart Stephen King :)
