While I was waiting for my plane to take off on Sunday night, I finished reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. A lot of people were upset that we had such a long delay; however, I was glad to have the extra time to finish my book and postpone meeting the Food Police. I thought that the book finished pretty strong; it read like one of Kingsolver’s novels. I enjoyed this book much more than I thought I would. I don't know, I guess I expected it to be kind of boring -- it wasn't.
Let's be honest. I'm not going to turn my backyard (in the desert Southwest) into a vegetable garden. But I will be much more conscientious in my shopping habits, looking for local and responsibly-produced food options when available. This book made me want to learn how to make cheese in my own kitchen and can tomatoes during the summer. And it was written in such a way tha ...more

This book was excellent. Though the idea of eating local and then writing about it isn't exactly original, Kingsolver kicks it up a notch by planting an enormous garden, raising turkeys (and slaughtering them), and including super informative mini-essays by her husband and daughter. Plus, there are recipes! I have seriously shifted my food buying habits over the past year, and this book has only served to strengthen my belief in local/organic. I'd love to talk to other vegans about this book. Seriously, as someone who already belongs to a CSA and thinks about food and ethics already, I didn't really expect to walk away so challenged from this book.
