I read this for the first time back around 2003. Then I re-read it for my book club just recently. I figured that I wouldn't remember much in the 12 years between, but the plot and characters remained surprisingly vivid -- perhaps because they had been reinforced by watching the movie, which follows the book closely and which is excellent. Yes, I've never read this before! My family and I listened to this one while on a long car trip, and WOW! That ending! Also, cried at one part in the book (you know the one).

This book was a lot better than the racist, horribly-soundtracked Disney film.
I have no idea why I didn't read this when I was younger. Highly recommended to the middle school and high school set.
