Multiple story lines swirl around the central plot of a brother and sister who are separated as young children. Each character's POV reveals a piece of the puzzle of their lives, while also revealing patterns that they (and we, perhaps) all share in common. We are all avoiding something, searching for something, disappointing our loved ones; we are all phonies, we all have regrets, we all suffer in some way; sometimes we do the right thing, and sometimes life turns out okay.

I really really wanted this to be a 5-star book, but it missed the mark...by just a little bit. So this is a solid 4-1/2, and in some respects 4-3/4 for me.

Beautiful writing. Captivating stories. Put it all together, however, and something's not quite masterful. A Thousand Splendid Suns is still by far my favorite. Nevertheless, this is worth the read.

Another beautiful, mesmerizing and heartbreaking story by one of my most favorite authors, Khaled Hosseini. This time it's not as emotionally intense as the first two books, but still, it is very haunting, like you don't want the book to ever end. This is a more personal and warm story about the impact of war in Afghanistan - no more over dramatic slash tortured scenes, but lots of touchy parts - regrets, deaths, untold loves.
